Problem

The child care market still offers few solutions developed specifically for the needs of babies and children with frizzy, curly, and wavy hair. The characteristics of these yarns require different approaches to cleansing, moisturizing, conditioning, and detangling, but most of the options available are generic or adapted from products developed for other hair types and age groups. This makes routine care more difficult for families and can result in dryness, breakage, pain, and discomfort during untangling. In addition to the functional gap, there is a gap in representation: black children still find little supply of children's products that recognize their characteristics and needs from the first years of their lives. Alma Mater operates at this intersection between cosmetic innovation, inclusion and Brazilian biodiversity, developing specific solutions for this demand.

Solution

Alma Mater develops children's cosmetics formulated from the start for frizzy, curly and wavy hair, considering the peculiarities of these yarns and the needs of early childhood. The Meu Crespinho Baby line offers a care routine consisting of specific products for cleaning, conditioning, hydration and detangling, with highly gentle formulations and plant-based active ingredients. Our proposal is to replace the adaptation of generic products with solutions developed for this audience, combining cosmetic performance, safety and user experience. At the same time, we incorporated ingredients from Brazilian biodiversity as part of an innovation and product development strategy, creating a child care category that is more inclusive, representative and appropriate to the diversity of Brazilian hair.

Business model

Direct sales to the consumer, on marketplaces and own website, with outsourced production and lean structure. The portfolio is organized by the child's stage, from Meu Crespinho Baby to Kids, which generates rewards within the same family over the years. The current average ticket is R$ 79,90, obtained during the acceptance test phase and without any investment in paid media. The strategy is to upgrade it through kits and formats of 300 ml, increasing items per order instead of raising the unit price. Then we opened channels with the highest volume per purchase, such as salons specializing in curly and frizzy hair and regional distributors. The initial growth is absorbed by the productive capacity already contracted, without the need for capex.

Market

We operate at the intersection of two global markets: children's haircare (US$ 6,5 Bi Em 2024, +4% a. a., Grand View) and haircare for textured hair (about US$ 5 bi, +7% a. a.). The intersection is fragmented, because the big brands treat children as an extension of a line and not as their own proposal. The relevant segment is the markets with a high prevalence of texture: Brazil, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and the multicultural consumer in the USA. We started with Brazil, 4The world's largest HPPC market (ABIHPEC). Local haircare: US$ 1,6 bi. More than 55% Of the population declares themselves black or brown (Census 2022) and are born about 2,4 millions of children a year. The child is the gateway and the restraint is familiar, from Meu Crespinho Baby to Kids and the adult line. The Amazonian asset (Ucuúba, Murumuru, Cupuaçu) supports a premium price and opens up exports for clean beauty in Europe and the USA.

Competitive differentiation

Alma Mater's differential lies in developing the solution based on a specific need, and not just adapting conventional children's products for frizzy, curly and wavy hair. The Meu Crespinho Baby line was designed for early childhood, considering simultaneously the characteristics of these yarns, the need for gentle care, and the experience of the child and the caregiver. We combine cosmetic formulation, plant-based active ingredients and Brazilian biodiversity in a proposal that combines performance, safety and representation. While major brands have children's lines or lines aimed at curly hair, Alma Mater occupies the intersection between these two markets, focusing exclusively on child care for hair with different curvatures. This specialization constitutes a positioning barrier and allows us to develop products, knowledge and brand around a demand that is still undermet.

Entry barrier

Alma Mater's main barrier to entry is not a single ingredient or technology, but rather the combination of specialized knowledge, formulation development, brand positioning, and relationship with a specific audience. We're building know-how on the needs of frizzy, curly, and wavy hair in early childhood, transforming that knowledge into products, care protocols, and a private label experience. The strategic use of Brazilian biodiversity also expands differentiation and creates opportunities for the continuous development of new products. As the brand grows, this combination tends to generate assets that are difficult to replicate quickly: accumulated knowledge about the consumer, intellectual property associated with formulations and processes when applicable, reputation, community, and distribution channels. Thus, a new entrant may reproduce an isolated product, but will have a harder time reproducing the set.

Traction

We have consistent initial indicators, still on a pre-operational scale. Em 2026, by August, they were 56 invoiced orders, with an average ticket of R$ 78,66. August was the best month of the operation, with 15 orders, about 2,5 times the average for the period. We are active on four channels: our own store, Shopee, Mercado Livre and, most recently, TikTok Shop. The indicator that we consider to be most relevant at this stage is the repurchase: 10% of the customers returned to buying spontaneously, without any structured retention, e-mail marketing, or active after-sales action. The reviews are consistently five stars, with the recurrence of three attributes: efficacy on frizzy children's hair, formula that does not cause burning eyes, and perception of care upon delivery. We also registered a spontaneous demand for items from the Kids line, which was not even launched. All of these results were obtained without structured investment in customer acquisition. That is precisely the lever that we seek to unlock.
